The communion of Yoga & Ayurveda

Yoga and ayurveda are the two closely linked holistic approaches developed in vedic era. ‘Ayurveda’ (one of the four upvedas) is an ancient system of individualized healthcare and perhaps the oldest recorded system of medicine. Commonly known as yoga’s medicine ayurveda aims on preventing doshic imbalances in the body. Ayurveda as a complete holistic philosophy fosters our relationship not only with our own mind and body but also with the environment in which we live. Yoga on the other hand is one of the six systems of vedic philosophy. Central to ayurvedic dinacharya (daily regimen) yoga is nurtured in the light of ayurveda and helps the seeker attain higher dimensions of self realization.

Ayurveda recommends an insightful adaptation of yoga to increase the efficacy of the postures as well as to enhance the flow of vital energy in the sensory layers of the subtle body. The two holistic treasures of ancient vedic culture together make a winning combination of self awareness and self realization. The depth of these interwoven holistic systems is truly limitless.

What is Ayurvedic Yoga?

A yoga practice based on ayurvedic guidelines and principles is ‘ayurvedic yoga’. Purely a vedic approach to well-being, this yoga form is based on integrated holistic values of yoga & ayurveda. It helps to heal the deeper layers of our body in the most sophisticated way and offers a redemptive path for emerging more whole.

Unique in its own right, ayurvedic yoga is an authentically and enormously beneficial practice that allows the whole system to work in alignment with each other. Here the practitioner fully understands the uniqueness of each individual and designs the entire practice accordingly, keeping in mind the age, level of energy, physical structure, doshic imbalances and emotional state of the yogi participants. Asanas are also chosen according to the dosha they stimulate that makes ayurvedic yoga a perfect strategy to a healthy lifestyle. It is a powerful inner bounding practice of yogic rejuvenation and ayurvedic healing that allows the yogis to focus on their own deeper self and help them cultivate a deeper listening to their own inner dialogue.

Why Ayurvedic Yoga ?

To let our physical and mental faculties work in peace and harmony the connoisseurs of traditional yoga and ayurveda suggested to combine the two complimentary sciences. These sages and mystic scholars of bygone ages who possessed higher spiritual powers were fully aware of the divergent aspects and the tremendous transformative potentials of the twin sciences. According to them, an effective communion of the two vedic disciplines brings incredible results to promote a blissful and fulfilling life based on higher awareness. Therefore, they emphasized to structure the yoga practice based on ayurvedic mind body profile of an individual.

Their understanding of yoga and ayurveda was based on their own diligent observations and experiences which they delivered to their disciples who later passed it on to the world, explaining how the two practices when woven together can work in perfect co-ordination to restore health, harmony and sustainability.
