Welcoming monsoon — the ayurvedic way

Monsoon/Varsha Ritu or the rainy season is the time that reminds us of lush green surroundings, water dripping from the leaves, dancing peacocks & moist winds. The season falls between mid-July to mid- September and this is the time for Ayurveda as the humidity levels in the atmosphere increases and we tend to sweat more.

Ayurveda describes this hot and humid weather as AMLA – PITTA weather. During this time of the year almost all the Doshas go out of balance. Pitta is accumulated, Vata is aggravated, digestive fire weakens, appetite is low and diseases start to occur decreasing OJAS the vital fluid.

Ayurveda strongly recommends to adopt a moderate & Pitta pacifying diet and regime to remain healthy. Our diet during this time should include freshly cooked light and warm food, warm water & herbal teas. Cold foods, raw vegetables, ice creams & yogurts should be avoided.

This healthy diet should be supported with a healthy Ayurvedic & Yogic lifestyle by keeping the body warm and avoiding day time sleep as much as we can with no over exertion. Light Yoga postures are recommended. Yogis should emphasize on Bandhas, Shavasana, Tratake, Shitali and Shitkari Pranayama and some specific Mudras such as Mahavedha Mudra & Ashwani Mudra.

Seasonal Ayurvedic purification and self- massage is highly beneficial during the rainy season.
